Stephen was tympanist in the Scottish Orchestra for 16 years. The BBC staff magazine, Ariel, said he "was at one time a keen cyclist and can swim like a fish"! [1]

He went on to assist Guy Warrack in conducting the BBC Scottish Orchestra.

In August 1945 it was announced that Stephen was to become conductor of the BBC Scottish Variety Orchestra.[2] He was replaced as music assistant and assistant conductor by Robert Irving.
