Andrew Stewart was said to have blocked the appointment of Alasdair Milne as head of programmes in the mid-1960s because he did not want to have "a young man in a hurry" at his side (although he was powerless to prevent Milne succeeding him as controller of BBC Scotland in the autumn of 1967).[1]
